"My safety and comfort in exchange for
my silence in the face of widespread untruthfulness, ignorance, and suffering." If being numb to such things is
the goal of spirituality or religiosity, I'd rather remain a materialist
or irreligious person. "Happiness is the goal," and I find no peace nor happiness
in being passive. I can't simply close my eyes and ears and choose to not see and
to not hear the suffering of others? Would I be happier if I were partly deaf
and blind? Is there any repose and hope left for someone whose heart is
callous and cannot feel? Why should I sacrifice the most precious and
lasting love and compassion in exchange for the beguiling goodies of
this illusory world, on this planet of death? Would I be complete and
peaceful? "What profits a man if he gains the whole world but loses his
own soul?" Would he not be more empty inside? ... God, the goal of
religion, is love; and religiosity, spirituality, or godliness is a
declaration of war against "Maya", the very cunning and deceptive, cruel
goddess of mammon, or materialism. In her embrace are the shackles of
chaos, misery, and death. Love (happiness) is but a word without
sacrifice, and war is an extremely active state of conflict. Both are
not about temporary solace, security, or peace.
To become freed from material anxiety and to become one with the Lord (mukti-bhukti) are the two witches of allurement. I desired nor prayed for either one of them.
"A pure devotee never cares for liberation. Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu
prayed to Kṛṣṇa, "My dear son of Nanda, I do not want any material
happiness in the shape of many followers, nor immense opulence in
wealth, nor any beautiful wife, nor do I want cessation from material
existence. I may take birth many times, one after another, but what I
pray from You is that my devotion unto You may always remain
unflinching."
